Gratitude at the Heart of Generosity
Even for the poorest among us, generosity is often prompted by a sense of gratitude. Recently, Pastor Jeff Bills related a moving story about HOPE’s mission team traveling to Cuba. The team, knowing how impoverished the people in the local church community were, agreed to leave their own clothing and shoes behind for them at the end of the trip. “This is wonderful!” the Cuban pastor exclaimed. “There are people in Guantanamo who are very poor and could really use these donations.”
The family of HOPE Church also has a grateful and generous heart that has been part of our DNA for the past 23 years. As we enter this beautiful season of Thanksgiving, it is expressed in many, many ways.
We are currently collecting Thanksgiving food for the Neighborhood Center in Camden as well as for HOPE’s Food Pantry. There is a list available in the lobby of the food items needed.
HOPE’s Family Ministry, along with our dynamic M.O.P.S. (Mothers of Preschoolers) group, caught the Christmas spirit early by participating in Operation Christmas Child. There’s still time to help by donating small gift items or postage money (see the ad in today’s bulletin for details). The group will be assembling the “Boxes of Love” this Tuesday, November 5 from 10 to 11am. All are invited to Room 100 to help pack up the shoeboxes to be mailed to the children at the House of Abraham Orphanage and School in Haiti in time for Christmas.
Once again, we will hold HOPE’s Community Christmas- Tree-Lighting Event this year on Saturday, November 30 at 6:30pm. We will have an outdoor stage for HOPE performers and Christmas sing-a-longs and booths for children’s activities as well as refreshment stands. There will be hot chocolate, cider, popcorn and cookies. And, even that bearded guy in the red suit will make a return appearance atop a fire truck. Also, this year, we will have a drawing for a $100 Visa gift card. Remember, this is more than just lighting a tree. It’s a wonderful opportunity to welcome families, friends and neighbors to the HOPE Church campus. We’re going to need your help to make it a success, so please consider filling out the enclosed volunteer form today.
Remember, we can never out give God. Our generosity always results in great blessings above and beyond the gifts you give others. The Bible puts it succinctly, “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” (Proverbs 11:25).
