Serving UrbanPromise

Our Friends from UrbanPromise

HOPE Church has been a proud and long supporter of the work being done by Picture1the many UrbanPromise ministries.

Twenty-six years ago, a small group of college missionaries working out of a church basement in Camden created the initial vision and mission for a summer camp for Camden’s neighborhood children. At that time, they were looking to provide a safe, loving, fun and creative place for local youth to escape the dangerous city streets. The idea was well received and dozens of enthusiastic children participated.

Picture2Over the decades, UrbanPromise has continued to grow and diversify. Today, in addition to summer camps, UP offers various wellness and job-training programs as well as many faith development opportunities. They also run CamdenForward School which is a private, Christian elementary and middle school for kindergarten through eighth grade students and the UrbanPromise Academy, a private Christian high school that fulfills the needs of students who have not met their academic potential in traditions school settings.

The successful UP model has also been replicated in many other cities across this countryPicture3 and others including Delaware, Miami and Trenton in the United States; Vancouver and Toronto in Canada; and Malawi, Honduras, and Uganda, to name a few. Since 2008, when UrbanPromise International was first established, 15 UPI ministries have been created worldwide. That means a total of 54 after-school programs and summer camps provide thousands of hours of free programming to children who are in need serving a total of 3,468 youth across the globe. Here is their mission statement:

THE UPI MISSION … is to prepare emerging leaders to initiate, develop, and sustain Christian-based youth development organizations and to seed their new ministries as they serve vulnerable children and teens in our world’s most under-resourced communities.
