Life – It’s more than a game – July 18

Welcome to week three!

Because these are loosely based on our sermon series, if you weren’t here on Sunday now is a great time to catch up on the podcast.

We talked about doing good yesterday.  What that looks like as part of our walk with Jesus. Pastor Steve closed us out by sharing this quote from Bob Goff’s book Love Does;

“We’re God’s plan, and we always have been.  We aren’t just supposed to be observers, listeners or have a bunch of opinions.  We’re not here to let everyone know what we agree and don’t agree with, because frankly, who cares?  Tell me about the God you love; tell me about what He has inspired uniquely in you; tell me about what you’re going to do about it, and a plan for your life will be pretty easy to figure out from there.  I guess what I’m saying is that most of us don’t get an audible plan for our lives.  It’s way better than that.  We get to be God’s plan for the whole world by pointing people toward Him.”

Wow – that is a whole lot packed into one paragraph!  I think one of the things we all struggle with is that big question, “What is o-HOW-DO-I-LAND-SKYWRITING-facebookGod’s plan for my life?” How many times have we wished He would plop a map down in front of us; or skywrite what we should do – so we couldn’t possibly miss it? Sometimes we get so caught up on the big picture that we miss what is right in front of us. We spend so much time thinking about what our lives would look like . .. if only this one thing was different.

Perhaps we are stuck in the realm of :

when I get married

when the kids are older

when I retire

once I find a new job

. . . .  then I can figure out God’s plan for me!  But God is with us right now- waiting to use us right where we are, right in the season we are in!  When I am coaching someone, one of the questions I will often ask is, “What would it look like for you to be  . . .”

So, I will ask all of us that same question, “What would it look like for us to be living out God’s plan right where we are?”

Once we wrestle with that we have to back it up . . . what is our next step? What can we do to move one step closer to fully living it out?

What else does the Bible say about doing good?

Proverbs 3:27; 11:17, 14:19, 14:22

Other books:

Galatians 6:9-10

Ephesians 2:10

Matthew 25:34-40

Matthew 5:16

Psalm 37:3

Discussion Questions:

  1. 1. What jumped out at you from this sermon?  Was there something you looked at in a new way?
  2. 2. What would it look like to be fully living out God’s plan in your life right where you are; seeking wisdom, doing good, movement, more compassion?
  3. 3. What is the next step you can in living out God’s plan for you?
  4. 4. Can you respond to the challenge that Bob Goff poses above, “Tell me about the God you love; tell me about what He has inspired uniquely in you; tell me about what you’re going to do about it”?
