Message Series: word. (God’s words)
This series, we’ll be getting into some of the nitty gritty parts of our faith. Our goal is to have a better understanding of why we believe what we believe so that when people ask us about our faith, we’ll be able to give a solid answer. Our theme verse comes from 1 Peter 3:15 which says, “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” Together, we want more than an elementary understanding of God. We want to have some real substance to our faith.
This week, we started with the question of how this all started. We turned to Genesis 1. But, instead of just reading the passage as is often done, we explored several different interpretations to this record of God’s creation. Each one has points that are legitimate as well as others that are difficult to believe. The point is, the Bible is not as simple as we make it out to be sometimes. But, at the end of the day, we have peace and assurance in the fact that regardless of how we interpret it, God spoke creation into existence.
So, some questions to kick around:
- What are two things you learned during SNL or iGroups?
- What questions do you have about the Creation story?
- How do you interpret what it says? (Literal, Symbolic, somewhere in between) Why?
We’re going to keep digging up these challenging questions. You might not have all the answers. Sometimes, nobody will. That’s just because our God is infinite. He can’t be held by the boundaries of our minds. He’s bigger than that. But, it’s still important and good to try to tackle some of these issues. So, get the discussions going. And, when no answers are coming, get help. Ask around. Ask youth leaders or people on staff at HOPE. But, for real, please do not google your questions. You will get some crazy stuff on there.Filed Under: High School, iGroups, Just For Parents, Middle School, Youth, Youth Message Series
