Message: Who’s Got Yo’ Back
Moms and Dads,
This week, we talked about having each other’s back. The great reliable Urban Dictionary has defined “I Got Yo’ Back” as an “expression assuring someone that you are watching out for them. Comes from making sure you are safe by watching what’s behind you when you’re busy looking ahead.”
When talking about life and walking in the Christian faith, it is completely necessary and utterly important to have people in your life that are looking out for your blindside, your six, your back.
In 1 Samuel 20, we read about that kind of “I got yo’ back” relationship between David and Jonathan. When our culture tells us that we should be seeking our own kingdom, we read about Jonathan, who is protecting David’s back at all costs. Jonathan was the prince, the heir to the throne and David has already been anointed by God to be the next King… does something seem odd about this? Why would Jonathan willingly give up ultimate power, prestige and wealth? This is true friendship.
So who has your back? Who’s back do you have? Here are some checkpoints to see if you have someone like this in your life:
- You ask each other the tough questions
- You lovingly look out for each other’s blind spots
- You unselfishly care for one another
- You pray for one another often
So, I urge you, moms and dads and students… be that person for someone and find that person for yourself.
