Earlier this month, our own Brynn Gutelius reached out with social media to help her 10-year-old daughter, Bailey, achieve a dream of a lifetime—to meet popular actress and recording artist Selena Gomez. You see Bailey has cystic fibrosis (CF) and was recently hospitalized at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia fighting a lung infection. For those who might not know about the disease, CF causes thick, sticky mucus to form in the lungs, pancreas and other organs, blocking airways, impacting digestion, causing damage and making it hard to breathe. While there have been many breakthroughs in its treatment, CF remains a life-threatening disease.
The Gutelius family had purchased tickets to the Selena Gomez concert before Bailey’s unexpected hospitalization. Obviously Bailey and her younger 8-year old sister Taylor were very disappointed the much-anticipated family outing would not take place. However, medical officials at CHOP made the decision to allow Bailey a six-hour leave from the hospital in order to attend the concert.
It was at that point that mom Brynn went into action. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Bailey could actually get to meet Selena Gomez in person the night of the concert? Utilizing social media, Brynn created a special “Help Bailey Meet Selena Gomez” Twitter and Facebook page. What followed was just amazing. Hundreds of friends and family “liked,”“shared,” and “tweeted” their support which culminated in the local Fox News station contacting Selena Gomez and ultimately—making a little girl’s dream come true.
As wonderful as that night was for the family, Bailey still struggles with her illness. We ask that you pray for her as she continues to battle this disease and pray for the doctors and the medical teams treating her. Ask God, the Great Physician, to grant a peace that passes all understanding to Bailey’s parents, Brynn and Kevin, sister Taylor and the extended family.
Here is a recent post from Brynn’s Facebook page. It offers a glimpse into the life of this remarkable little girl.
“I was sitting at the desk here in the corner of the hospital room letting myself cry for a minute while Bailey was in the bathroom. She came out and asked me if I was ok, and I said I’m just really tired and a bit sad. She put her hands on my back and prayed for me. Yeah I was star struck with Selena but sometimes my own kid takes star struck to a whole different level. My girl is amazing and I have a lot to learn from her.”
We all do, Brynn, we all do.
