HOPE Welcomes Back Bruce Main
We look forward to Dr. Bruce Main, the founder and president of UrbanPromise, as he brings his annual message to us next Sunday, February 10 at both the 9 and 10:30am worship services.
For those who may not know, our relationship with Bruce and the Camden-based ministry goes back to the very beginning of our own 22-year history when HOPE Church was first forming. It was with intention that Jeff Bills, our lead pastor, placed a high value on a suburban church like ours reaching out and supporting urban initiatives. Based on his friendship with Bruce Main, Jeff believed the emerging UrbanPromise ministry would be the best way for HOPE to be involved in Camden.
A few years before HOPE started, a small group of college missionaries inspired by the work of Dr. Tony Campolo began meeting in a tiny church basement in East Camden. Determined to offer a safe, loving, fun and creative place for local youth to escape dangerous city streets, UrbanPromise was born and the friendship between two young pastors continued to grow. In the years that followed, the people of HOPE Church have had many occasions to enjoy, support and partner with the many ministries of UrbanPromise.
Bruce established the first summer camp in the city of Camden in 1988, at the age of 25. He has held many UrbanPromise roles including camp director and executive director, as well as the visionary creator of UrbanPromise’s satellite locations in Wilmington, DC; Miami, FL; Trenton, NJ; Toronto, ON; Vancouver, BC; Copán, Honduras; and several areas of Malawi. In addition, we have counted ourselves blessed to have Bruce as a regular guest speaker here at HOPE.
Selected by Christianity Today magazine as one of “America’s Up and Coming Leaders,” Bruce speaks nationally and internationally at mission conferences, colleges, churches, and business seminars around the globe. He and UrbanPromise are featured regularly in local media outlets and were highlighted on Diane Sawyer’s 20/20 special “Waiting on the World to Change” and ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
Bruce is an adjunct faculty member at Eastern University and co-authored the book Revolution & Renewal: How Churches Are Saving Our Cities with Dr. Tony Campolo, professor emeritus at Eastern and renowned sociologist and Christian leader. Bruce has also authored If Jesus Were A Sophomore: Discipleship for College Students, If Jesus Were A Senior: Last Minute Preparations for a Life of Discipleship, Spotting the Sacred: Finding God in Unlikely Places, and Holy Hunches: Responding to the Promptings of God. His latest book, The Promise Effect, is available in The Source bookstore today. (Donations are appreciated.)
Bruce received his BA in theology from Azusa Pacific University, an MA in theology from Fuller Theological Seminary and a DM from Princeton Theological Seminary. He lives in New Jersey with his wife Pamela and has three children.
