The Way: Bible GPS
Recently on the way to the airport to catch an early morning flight, there was a huge backup on 95. We could see the traffic was at a standstill as we approached the toll plaza. In an effort to make it to our flight in time, I grabbed the phone, pulled up Waze and found an alternate route to the pre-flight parking lot. Ten minutes later we were parked and on a shuttle on our way to the airport. Without the GPS we would have sat in gridlock, probably still making our flight, but it would have been a stressful bout.
At Hope have been exploring the message series “The Way” on Sunday mornings this fall. Currently, we are discussing how the Bible is a way to encounter God. As Randy Petersen stated this week, we have a God who loves to communicate and speak to us. From the beginning of time, from the very beginning of the Bible, the third verse in it says, “Then God said, ‘Let there be light.’” All through Scripture God spoke to his people, and He still does so today.
Are we as fast to open our Bible app as we are our GPS app when we need guidance, a better route, wisdom to avoid disaster, or to find the way God desires us to go in our everyday life?
I was recently struggling with feelings of rejection and loneliness when I was not invited to a party to which many of my friends were invited. I told myself all of the things that I tell my kids when they aren’t invited to birthday parties…”Not everyone can be invited to every party,” “I’m sure it wasn’t intentional,” “You really didn’t want to go anyway.” Nevertheless, I couldn’t shake the negative feelings. Through praying over it, I felt God nudge me to spend some time in scripture. I have been reading through the Book of Psalms, so I opened my Bible from where I left off, Psalm 15, and was blown away at how God spoke to me right through His Word in The Message version.
“God, who gets invited to dinner at your place? How do we get on your guest list? ‘Walk straight, act right, tell the truth. Don’t hurt your friend, don’t blame your neighbor…You’ll never get blacklisted if you live like this.”
I actually laughed out loud at how clearly God spoke to me through the Bible! Sometimes it’s easy to think that this book, that is thousands of years old, may not be applicable any longer…but I assure you, it is! May we all use is as our daily GPS, and His Way will guide us better than we could ever imagine!
