The Ins and Outs of Us: Communitas
In Mount Laurel, Pastor Rick talked about the idea of coming together to form community. But more than that, he introduced us to the idea of communitas. Communitas is inspired fellowship; a group's pleasure in sharing common experiences; being 'in the zone'—as in music, sport, and work; the sense felt by a group when their life together takes on full meaning. The experience of communitas, almost beyond strict definition and with almost endless variations, often appears unexpectedly.
I love the idea that this is what God calls us to. It isn’t just community, it isn’t just seeing each other once or twice a week. No, it is the shared life experience; the sense that life has taken on full meaning. Something incredible happens when we join together for something larger than ourselves. Now, the reality is we can glimpse this in a variety of places in our culture, we see it among first responders, we see it in those that experience a tragedy together. But when we share the experience of knowing Jesus, there is a bond that is unbreakable. We are called to pour into one another. We are called to share life and dive into God’s truths together but it doesn’t end there. We are called to take our experiences out and invite others join with us and experience Jesus love first hand.
Communitas; when life takes on full meaning. Jesus. He gives us that full meaning and once we taste it—there is no greater thing we can do than to go out and share it!
